The human body needs the basic element iodine, but does not produce its own, and iodine deficiency is common. Lugol’s iodine is an excellent way to supplement the body with iodine to correct this deficiency. Iodine, especially in the form of Lugol’s, benefits multiple body processes, making Lugol’s iodine a natural remedy for a variety of health issues. Additionally, since iodine is antiseptic in nature, it can be used topically to fight infections and heal skin conditions.

When Should Lugol’s Iodine be Taken?
Lugol’s Iodine is ideally taken in the morning or afternoon. Taking it in the late afternoon or evening can cause insomnia since iodine helps to restore energy.
Taking Lugol’s Iodine with food helps with the absorption of iodine.
Companion nutrients can be taken at the same time.
Topical Use of Lugol’s Solution
Lugol’s iodine solution is used topically as a disinfectant and to treat a variety of skin problems.
Lugol’s iodine will cause a temporary staining of the skin! For some, the stain will disappear in a few hours. For others it can take days. Iodine does absorb through the skin and is a preferred way for some to “take” an iodine supplement. However, it can be difficult to ensure how much iodine the body is receiving when using this method. For people who experience side effects from oral use, however, this may be a better way to benefit from iodine.
Skin Problems that Benefit from Topical Iodine Use
For skin use, apply 5% Lugol’s iodine to the area of concern once or twice daily as long as necessary. If skin is sensitive or broken, 5% may be too strong and 2% used instead. Alternately, after applying iodine massage some castor oil or coconut oil into the iodine painted area to keep the area from stinging or burning.
Oral Use of Lugol’s Iodine
Historically, a sore throat was painted (internally) with iodine.
For oral infections, Lugol’s iodine can be added to water and swished in the mouth. (1 drop in a tablespoon of water.)
The Importance of Iodine
Iodine is included in the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines, and specifically noted for its benefit to the thyroid gland.
Historically, iodine was commonly prescribed by doctors for a variety of health problems, especially for goiter. With the invention of pharmaceutical medications, iodine fell out of favor. Advocates of natural health, however, has helped to re-popularize using iodine supplements to correct iodine deficiency, which in turns relieves health problems caused by iodine deficiency.
Isn’t Iodine in Food?
Of course, the ideal way to get iodine into the body is with food. However, there are a limited number of foods that contain iodine, and levels of iodine in foods is often not enough to supply the daily needs of the body.
Unfortunately, because soils are often depleted of iodine, many of these foods lack ideal iodine levels.
While fish and sea vegetables can be good sources of iodine, they are often not accessible or utilized.
Other additives in food and water can affect the amount of iodine that is actually available for the body to use.
Iodine used to be added to bread as a dough conditioner. However, it turns out that bromide works well in place of iodine in bread and is less expensive. Not only has this reduced the amount of iodine in common food sources, bromide inhibits the body’s uptake of iodine.
Chlorine and fluoride, common elements added to water supplies, also keep the body from effectively using the iodine it receives through foods.
While iodine is added to table salt, the amount added is the minimum required to keep goiters at bay
Low iodine levels can cause many health problems including hypothyroidism, cretinism (mental retardation) in babies born to mothers whom are iodine deficient, dry skin, hair loss, weight gain, slow metabolism, fibrocystic breast disease, migraines, low resistance to infection, and anxiety to name a few.
Fortunately, iodine supplementation can bring relief to conditions caused by iodine insufficiency, and Lugol’s iodine is an ideal way to supplement with iodine.
What is Lugol’s Iodine?
Lugol’s iodine was created by French scientist Jean Lugol in 1829.
Lugol’s iodine is not the name of a brand of iodine, but the name of a specific formulation of iodine.
Lugol’s Iodine is an aqueous solution of potassium iodide and iodine. “Aqueous solution” simply means that water is the medium for the iodine.

Why is Lugol’s Better than other iodine supplements?
Lugol’s Iodine contains three forms of iodine – molecular iodine, iodide, tri-iodide. The body will use different forms for different purposes.
Iodide helps to remove heavy metals like mercury, lead, aluminum, and arsenic from the body.
Iodide is used by the thyroid and salivary glands and the skin.
Elemental iodine is used by the breasts, prostrate, digestive system, and brain.
How Much Lugol’s Solution Should I Use? (Take with healthy fats)
There will be a wide range of iodine needs and as with most natural remedies there is no “one size fits all” dosage.
The famous Dr. D. C. Jarvis recommended a tonic twice a week of the following:
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar in a glass of water with 1 drop of Lugol’s (5%) Solution, taken twice a week.
Some alternative doctors recommend 12.5-50 mg of Lugol’s Iodine daily, especially when treating hypothyroidism, autoimmune diseases, and other significant health problems. However, it is wise to work with a trained medical professional when taking larger amounts of Lugol’s solution. Suddenly taking large amounts of iodine (or any supplement for that matter) is likely to cause side effects. This is likely in part due to the fact that iodine is removing metals and toxins from the body.
When the body is deficient in one nutrient, it is not uncommon for it to be deficient in others. When taking Lugol’s solution it is important that “companion nutrients” are also available to the body because iodine works with these nutrients in the body.
Pregnant & nursing women should increase Iodine intake, up to double since it is critical for neurological development of children and even associated with increased IQ.

How Much Iodine is in Lugol’s Solution?
Lugol’s Iodine is typically sold in two strengths – 2% and 5%.
2% Lugol’s Solution
1 drop of 2% solution contains 2.5 mgs of iodine
5 drops of 2% solution contains 12.5 mgs of iodine
20 drops of 2% solution contains 50 mgs of iodine
5% Lugol’s Solution
1 drop of 5% solution contains 6.25 mgs of iodine
2 drops of 5% solution contains 12.5 mgs of iodine
8 drops of 5% solution contains 50 mgs of iodine
Recipe for 5.5-6% Lugol’s.
Distilled water – 1 Quart
3.5 oz of Potassium Iodide Crystals (Caution)
50 grams of Iodine Prilled Prills (Caution)
Caution skin contact and eye contact.
Mix with a non metal (wood or plastic)
Sit in the dark for 24 hours.
Store out of light or in Dark bottle.

Lugol’s – How many milligrams per drop?
Iodoral 50 mg = Iodine 20 mg, Iodide 30 mg
Iodoral 12.5 mg = Iodine 5 mg, Iodide 7.5 mg
Lugol’s 5% = Iodine 2.5 mg, Iodide 3.75 mg = 6.25 mgs total per drop
Lugol’s 2% = Iodine 1.0 mg, Iodide 1. 5 mg = 2.5 mgs total per drop
The chemical composition of Lugol’s is: 5% (wt/v) – Iodine (I2) 10% (wt/v) – Potassium Iodide (KI) – (7.5 mgs Iodide & 2.5 mgs of Potassium) Distilled Water – 85%

How much Iodine do I need to take? There are no amounts that can be given as a blanket recommendation. Everyone needs different amounts based on their body’s ability to utilize the nutrients as well as the level of toxic halide exposure they have each day. If you are dealing with a severe health condition then your dosages would need to be higher than those trying to maintain good health.
- Maintenance – It was once believed that a good maintenance dose is 25 mgs per day. But with more information being gained about the exposures to halides bombarding our systems (bromides, fluorides, chlorine) as well as mercury, etc., maintenance of health may require higher doses of iodine. The iodine doctors are now beginning to believe that 50 mgs may be the minimum required dose.
- Cancer – Cancer is a result of mutated cells. Iodine is absolutely critical for something called P53 gene which is known as the “keeper of the genetic code”. Without iodine and selenium it will not function to eliminate abnormal cells from the body such as cancer. Cancer patients have taken anywhere from 50 – 300

- Children – These are the levels that I gave my children at the various ages. This is not meant to be a recommendation but a guideline for what was safe for my (Dr. Buist) children and others I have been in contact with. General guidelines suggest .08 mg x the weight of the child but is dependent on the health condition. i. Up to 3 years – 3 drops of Detoxified Iodine (www.iodinesource.com) per day or take 1 drop of 5% Lugol’s solution in water and then take ½ of the water and give it to the child.his results in 3.125 mg / dose. ii. 3yrs to 5 yrs – 6.25 mgs of Iodoral or 1 drop 5% Lugols Solution (6.25 mg) iii. 5 yrs to 9 yrs – 12.5 mgs of Iodoral or 2 drops 5% Lugols Solution (12.5 mg) iv. 9 yrs to 16 yrs – 25 mgs of Iodoral or 4 drops 5% Lugols Solution (25 mg) v. 16 yrs and up – will depend on health issues, weight, etc and cannot be given in generalities. Dosages range from 12.5 mgs to 300 mgs.
Supporting Nutrients for taking Iodine. These are required to support the body while supplementing with iodine: a. Vitamin C – 2,000 – 5,000 mgs / day – supports the symporters and assists as an antioxidant to detoxing. b. Selenium – 200 – 400 mcg / day – needed for detoxification and thyroid hormone creation. c. Unrefined salt (Celtic) – ½ tsp / day – supports adrenals, binds to bromide and assists in removal, supports symporters (sodium iodine symporters or NIS) d. Magnesium – 400 mgs / day – critical for over 300 enzyme reactions in the body. e. Optional – ATP CoFactors -1 tablet 2x / day – when individuals continue to feel fatigued or have autoimmune thyroid disease this product can assist in increasing ATP (energy) within the cells. Riboflavin and no-flush niacin.
When should I take my supplements? a. Iodine should be taken with food. This seems to enhance absorption as well as protecting sensitive stomachs from a potential upset. b. The supporting nutrients can be taken with iodine and with food. There is no spacing or timing required. Some believe it is necessary to take Vit C separate from Iodine supplements. This has not been proven to be necessary as many have had success taking them together, so it is the individual’s choice as to what they do. c. Iodine should be taken earlier in the day (before 2 pm) because for some it increases energy so much that they are unable to sleep.
